Who we are

The Chamber Theatre is a small independent non-profit theatre company formed in Louisville, Kentucky in late 2015. Since our first production (Chek-Mate: Two Comic Vaudvilles by Anton Chekhov), we have explored and reimagined classic texts and stories. We remain conscious of the place of women in our storytelling, as well as the place of other marginalized and under-represented voices. We try to achieve this through:

  • Concentrating on performance and storytelling

  • Encouraging actors to be our collaborators

  • Considering the place of the audience in the work we produce as both observer and participant

  • Choosing work that is relevant and can help us unveil the nature of humanity around us in its different guises

  • Challenging the orthodoxy of the televisual theatrical experience by selecting performance spaces that nurture intimate experiences

Together, we work with our colleagues and friends in our local theatre community to blend our theatrical backgrounds and experiences and develop a distinct approach to our productions.

Our Mission

The goal of The Chamber Theatre is to produce high-quality small-scale theatre that is intimate, personal, and often engages directly with the audience in ways that go beyond the televisual. We aim to choose work that lifts up and recognizes the place of especially (but not exclusively) women in society, promoting the idea that all of us have opportunities to make better decisions and choices, while exploring how expectations of traditional gender roles are fraught, and that unhealthy cycles can be rerouted to a more equitable way of living.

Polina Shafran

Co-Founder & Co-Artistic Director (2015-2022)

Polina was born in Moscow, Russia and grew up in Israel and for a number of years lived in Louisville, before returning to Israel. As a child, she got to see all the big names of Russian theatre on Moscow stages and that’s when her love for theatre began. She got her theatre education in Israel, performing in multiple plays in both Russian and Hebrew. After arriving to Louisville she joined the local theatre community and performed with Savage Rose Classical Theatre Company, Pandora Productions, The Bardstown Theatre, The Alley Theatre, and many more. Being multilingual, she has translated plays, songs, and poetry. In 2013, she translated Chekhov’s one act play The Proposal.

After working with Martin French as an actor in The Ruffian On The Stair in 2014, the two immigrants decided to work together to produce Chekhov’s The Proposal and The Boor. The success of their collaboration led to the foundation of The Chamber Theatre. The two shows were dubbed Chek-Mate and debuted on January 15, 2016, starring Polina as Natalia, directed by Martin, and with current Artistic Co-Director Jay Padilla-Hayter as the stage manager. The show was revived for visits to the University of Kentucky and Louisville Free Public Library. After this inaugural production, Polina went on to play lead roles in Creditors (December 2016) and A Doll’s House (March 2017). She made her directing debut for The Chamber Theatre in November 2017 with In The Shadow Of The Glen as a part of Tales from the Hills. She also translated, adapted, and directed All People Sneeze (March 2018), a compendium of adaptations of some of Chekhov’s short stories. While responsibilities to family curtailed her directing and acting with The Chamber Theatre over her remaining years involved, Polina remained a key figure in the organization and managed our internet presence right up to the advent of the Covid Pandemic. Polina is a vital part of the history of The Chamber Theatre and we will always be grateful to her for it.

As a theatre company that uses many locations for rehearsal and performance across Kentuckiana, The Chamber Theatre wants to acknowledge the history of the people here before us and of the land we reside on. The area we work and live in, now known as Kentuckiana, has been a home to many Indigenous tribes, including the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Kaskaskia, Miami, Shawnee, and Osage peoples. We want to honor and acknowledge the presence and influence of Indigenous people of the past, as well as the over 30,000 Native Americans living in Kentucky and the 25,000 Native Americans living in Indiana today.
